Want to explore the best ski resorts in the Alps but prefer to take your own skis or snowboard? We totally understand – you'll enjoy it even more with your own gear! Luckily nowadays most airlines let you check your gear in as special luggage, and it's affordable, too!
It costs between €40 and €90 each way to check in your skis or snowboard (including boots and poles) as special luggage, depending on the airline and flight distance. What's more, this luggage doesn't exclude your checked bags, which mean you can also carry a bag with your ski or snowboarding clothing, which takes up quite a lot of room, along with the rest of your stuff.
If you choose that option, we advise you to make sure you pack and protect your gear for the journey. It's also a good idea to pack all your bits in one single bag, as much as you can, so it's easier and faster to check in.
Other practical tips:
- Book your special luggage as soon as possible to make sure there's space on the plane. You can do it when you book your tickets or in the customer area on the airline's website.
- Go to the airport a bit earlier than usual. Many terminals have special belts for special luggage and it might take longer than usual to check in.
- Bring your ski jacket with you on the plane to save space in your suitcase.
- Carry your boots in a backpack as hand luggage, if they do not exceed the size limit. That way you'll only have to worry about packing the skis with poles or your snowboard.
We hope you find great snow, where you go!
