The Best Beaches at Cabo de Gata

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve is one of Spain’s most beautiful, unusual and yet arid landscapes – possibly one of the most striking ensembles in Europe, too. Magmatic in origin, this massif with its bizarre forms and sparse but interesting vegetation has the added value of skirting the coast, encompassing a considerable number of beaches and coves with stunning blue water, in stark contrast to the bare surrounding landscape of rock and sand.

If you are planning to roam through this magnificent nature reserve in south-east Almería, be sure to put on sturdy footwear, wear a hat and stock up on water and provisions, as most of these beaches are wild and lack amenities. You are encouraged to hike between the beaches and the few villages dotted about the area. Many of the spots we are taking you to are difficult to reach, although well worth the effort, as awaiting you are some spectacular views and a dip in splendid, crystal-clear waters. Let’s be off, then!

Playa de los Muertos

This beach is separated from its parking lot by a steep 700-metre slope, so you are urged to take it easy. At the end of the narrow track you come to a wide pebble beach with blue water where you can have a soothing bathe. As is the case on most beaches in Cabo de Gata, nudists and swimming-trunk die-hards coexist in perfect harmony.

Cala de Enmedio

This cove lies one and a half kilometres from Agua Amarga, an old fishing port currently sought after by tourists. Access is only by boat or on foot. On reaching this splendid cove, you will be dazzled by the fine white sand and the two fossilised sand dunes flanking it, striking a contrast with the turquoise-coloured seawater. A little paradise on earth.

Cala de San Pedro

This small cove, located just over an hour’s walk from the fishing village of Las Negras, differs from the rest of the beaches in the area in that it boasts a sweet-water spring. On account of this, there is more vegetation in the cove, enabling a hippy community to live here all year around. The water source also accounts for the fact that the Castle of San Pedro was built here in the 16th century as a defence against assaults by Berber pirates. The castle ruins are currently open to visitors.

Playa de los Genoveses

This beach, stretching for over one kilometre, with its fine sand and crystal-clear water, is one of the most popular and most frequented in Cabo de Gata. Located just over a kilometre from San José, you can reach it on foot. However, if you are not inclined to doing exercise, there is a bus that you can take to the beach. If you’re driving there, bear in mind that the parking lot is not very spacious and can fill up quickly in summer.

Playa de Mónsul

Having been turned into a film set by Steven Spielberg in his Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, this is a must-visit beach, particularly because of the spectacle provided by the encircling ensemble of huge eroded lava rocks. Situated four kilometres from San José, it can be reached by car or bus (this is the most advisable option in August).

Cala Rajá

Halfway between San Miguel de Cabo de Gata and San José, this is the most uninhabited cove of all. It has pleasant fine sand and it is worth climbing the surrounding rock formations to see the views of the El Dedo reef and the Cala de la Punta Negra.

Sicily in Bites

Sicily sits proudly in the Mediterranean, aware of its plentiful charms. Its cuisine is one of these. Not only is it self-supplied from its splendid larder, it provides the whole of Italy with its produce. Fresh market garden produce, fish, wines and confectionery which, although available across half the globe, taste that much better when savoured in situ. Hence, the Grand Festival of Italian Cuisine par excellence is held on this Italian island every year with the onset of summer. This year’s Cibo Nostrum will take place from 11 to 13 June. The festival sees producers displaying their wares in street stalls, while chefs and locals swarm the precincts to explore the latest offerings and share them with whoever happens to be on the island. If you’re planning on an escape to Sicily, this event will enable you to discover its culinary splendour.

Around one hundred chefs and wine merchants will be taking part in the event, for which the attendance figures continue to grow each year. If you still don’t know what it’s like to taste a good local wine at the foot of Mt Etna or to savour oily fish followed by cannoli in the formidable Taormina, be sure not to miss out on Cibo Nostrum if you want to enjoy such moments.

Over a three-day period, which will include ongoing, live culinary demonstrations, you can taste the essence of Sicilian cuisine served up on a platter. Clearly, you would need more time to discover the island more thoroughly, but Cibo Nostrum will point you in the right direction to glean the major ingredients, dishes, assortment and venues.

Must-visit restaurants include Sabir Gourmanderie, set in a priceless park on the slopes of Mt Etna, which is ideal for discovering flavours typical of the volcanic soil, and Kistè Easy Gourmet, the new eatery of chef Pietro d’Agostino in marvellous Taormina.

When in Catania, among the wine cellars with good food and the usual wine shops, we can recommend Salumeria Scollo for tasting and sampling, as well as the Etnashire wine shop on Viagrande, which also has an online store where you can order the Sicilian products of your choice. You will want to bring your suitcase back with such wines as Vigna la Miccia or Notti Stellate, a sparkling Castelluccimiano Brut or the Marsala which in Sicily pairs really well with dessert cheeses.

And, if we delve into the realm of sweet things, as that is the sort of memory you will take from the island, make a point of dropping in on the pâtisserie run by master pastry chef Corrado Assenza at Caffè Sicilia, the undisputed king of the most exquisite signature cassata (a traditional cake based on ricotta, sugar, sponge, marzipan, candied fruit and castor sugar) and cannoli (a tube-shaped confectionery filled with ricotta cream).

Edinburgh Capital of the Scenic Arts

Edinburgh, one of the most charming cities in Europe, the cradle of literary scholars and the setting for many novels, has been hosting the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF), one of the most celebrated in the scenic arts, since 1947. During the festival, dance, opera, music and theatre don their finest raiment and reveal their myriad facets, from classical to innovative, turning the Scottish capital into a veritable crucible of inspiration and creativity that acts as a magnet, drawing huge audiences eager to try out new sensations and get carried away by the sheer size and variety of events on offer.

Like some “high feast of culture”, in addition to filling the major theatres and concert halls, the festival programme encompasses the whole city, so that even bars, shops, streets and any venue worth its salt is turned into yet another stage. A stroll along the Royal Mile, for instance, can end up becoming an adventure in itself, buzzing as it is with performances, concerts and shows of all kinds.

This year, the Edinburgh Festival runs from 5 to 29 August. On account of the large number of visitors concentrated in the city during that period, it is advisable to book accommodation some months in advance, to avoid having nowhere to sleep or ending up forking out a fortune for it. As for getting tickets for the host of different events – which first went on sale in January – you can buy them online on the festival website.

And There’s More Too!

While it might seem incredible, Edinburgh’s festival offerings go far beyond the big event itself. Indeed, it extends through the whole summer.  So, for those of you who haven’t had enough with the Edinburgh Festival proper, here are some of the other festivals where you can quench your thirst for more culture and more events:

- Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival. The ideal run-up to the Edinburgh Festival is a jazz festival! Make sure you don’t miss the street performances and celebrations which take place at the start of the festival and which, for one day, turn the Grassmarket area into a sort of New Orleans at the height of the Mardi Gras. From 15 to 24 July 2016.

- Edinburgh Art Festival. Local emerging art and new international art trends are the major draws at this event which is held in museums, art galleries and art studios around the city. From 28 July to 28 August 2016.

- Edinburgh Festival Fringe. An alternative version of the Edinburgh Festival which showcases new talent in the scenic arts. From 5 to 29 August 2016.

- Edinburgh International Book Festival. In a city of literary figures like Edinburgh – it was the first to be designated City of Literature by UNESCO – a festival dedicated to books would not be out of place. Charlotte Square is the main meeting point, the spot where exhibitors gather and numerous activities are held (talks, public lectures, book signings, etc.) From 13 to 29 August 2016.

- Edinburgh Mela Festival. All kinds of music and dance are hosted at this festival, organised by Edinburgh’s ethnic minorities. Held in Leith Links park, it is full of colour and good vibes. From 27 to 28 August 2016.

- Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Parades by military bands, bagpipe concerts and spectacular firework displays, held against the scenic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. What more could you ask for? From 5 to 27 August 2016.
