Just 10 kilometers from Stuttgart, you will discover Esslingen, a beautiful city that keeps in its old town several medieval monuments. You’ll be fascinated by walking beside the romantic canals and quaint alleyways which will take you back in time to perceive medieval rustic charm.

Stands out among its buildings the former House of Trade and Taxes, the Kauf-und Steurerhaus, which is now the Town Hall. On its facade is situated the astronomical clock, one of the oldest in Germany and the only one that has retained its original 1951 mechanism, which drives clockwise and funny figures.

Furthermore, Esslingen still retains that importance as winemaking, it had in the Middle Ages and produces wines really appreciated. You must try the Württemberger variety!

And if you visit Esslingern in December, do not miss the spectacular Christmas market, with its traditional Renaissance fair where artists, craftsmen and merchants, dressed in medieval costumes, look like they are really coming from ancient times.

During the reconstruction of the city of Nantes in the ’50s, after World War II, and having the idea of relieving the housing shortage at that time, Le Corbursier conceived La Maison Radieuse, one of the unité d’habitation (unit room) that have become a landmark in the twentieth century’s civil architecture which later, served as inspiration for many European cities.

The first of these Unité d’habitation was built in Marseilles. Later on, in 1955, was built a very similar version but slightly refined in Rezé, just 3 or 4 miles from Nantes.

At first sight, it is surprising that this building with symmetrical structure and vivid coloured windows in contrast to the gray of its structure was so revolutionary at that time. The idea was that the 294-duplex-apartments building would work formally and functionally independent as a boat. For that purpose, he included games communal areas and gardens.

Nowadays, most of the apartments are inhabited, but a few can be visited in this sort of original House-Museum.

Santa Catalina, a few meters away from the sea, is one of the most emblematic and dynamic neighborhoods in Palma. Which once was the fishermen’s suburb, has now turned into one of the city areas with more character and personality. The Market acts as heart and hub of the district with a great number of attractive shops and restaurants filling the city streets.

One of these enchanting corners is Frida Watson, a cosy shop selling vintage furniture. Original pieces from the 50s, 60s and 70s land in Mallorca coming from all sorts of places worldwide and in perfect condition. Dressers, center tables, couches, as well as different decoration elements, are all collected and arranged along the various rooms that make the establishment. The carpets made by the brand Brita Sweden, produced in vinyl and with geometric patterns, are simply irresistible, together with the retro futuristic lamps imported from Denmark. A warm space were one can find classic design pieces and functional works of art, were one only feels like getting an “Old-Fashioned” cocktail and settle to live in.

The Out of the Blue is a space for creators and artists that also serves as a rehearsal, exhibition and concert hall.

Its popular Flea Market, which takes place every last Saturday of the month from 10:00 to 15:00, attracts visitors from all over to buy and rummage through all the second-hand and antique objects on offer. You’ll find vintage clothing, accessories, costume jewellery, music, films, books, furniture and many other curious items. You’re sure to find something that takes your fancy hidden among the goods on sale at the more than 50 stalls that gather for this market.

The Bruncheon & Food Market is held on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00 to 15:00, where you can enjoy a delicious brunch while listening to live music and where you can buy organic fruit and vegetable produce or traditional sweets, among many other things.
