About the Bay of Oran stands the Monte Murdjadj or Monte de Santa Cruz , an elevation of 386 meters of historical significance . At its highest point stands the fortress of Santa Cruz, a former Spanish military outpost built between 1577 and 1604 , and testimony to the strong Spanish presence in the city between the years 1509 to 1972 . Although the Ottoman Empire was the first to build a fort at this place , during the the Spanish Government on Oran for 300 years, the original fortification was modified and improved and it was also the subject of numerous attacks.
At the foot of the fortress you have the Chapel of Santa Cruz and Shrine of Our Lady of Health of Oran . Do not miss the fantastic views from this vantage point over the harbor and the Gulf of Oran. Up to this point some 10,000 persons belonging to or sympathetic to the Bel Horizon Association of Santa Cruz come every First of May from Square November 1 , in the city center, heritage enthusiasts who demand the rehabilitation and development of the fortress of Santa Cruz.
The strong and the Chapel of Santa Cruz are the major attractions of Oran and Hispanic last remains of the city. The set of all the citadel was recently declared a National Monument by Algerian cultural commission
